BMD’s top 5 video game soundtracks
Well, I guess it’s about time I make a top 5 video game soundtracks list…this isn’t going to be easy. Here we go!
When I think of a video game, probably one of the first things I think of is the soundtrack. A soundtrack can really immerse you into a video game or ruin the whole experience for you. Usually when you play a game you don’t really notice the music in the background because it isn’t anything special. Then there are those games that have an okay soundtrack where a couple songs are memorable but the rest are pretty mediocre, like DDD stated with Link’s Awakening and Tal Tal Heights. Finally there are those few games that knock the ball out of the park and make you want to dance uncontrollably when that soundtrack starts playing, which is probably Banjo-Kazooie for me but DDD so kindly stole that one. In this list, I’ve stuck to the games that have soundtracks which change the gameplay and without them the game wouldn’t be nearly as good as it is. Anyways, enough of the cheesy intros. Lets get on with the list!
#5 Pokémon Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald – Game Freak
All of the Pokémon games are great. They have good gameplay, fun map designs, and amazing soundtracks. It was hard to choose, but when it comes down to it, the soundtrack from R/S/E is my favourite.
Opening Theme
Petalburg City
Slateport City
Marine Science Museum
This song is a remix of the S.S. Anne theme from Pokémon Blue/Red. I personally like this version better because it is slow and relaxing.
Route 113
OOOOOH this song is so damn catchy. I’m getting a nostalgia attack from listening to it. HNNNNNNG. MUST. STOP. LISTENING.
Also a good thing to note is it sounds like a remix of Snowman from Earthbound.
Full soundtrack:
#4 Ratchet & Clank: Going Commando – Insomniac Games
Just like the Pokémon series, the Ratchet & Clank games are all fantastic. I decided to choose the Going Commando soundtrack for number 4 because Going Commando is my favourite R&C game and in my opinion, has the best soundtrack of them all.
Planet Tabora
This score is probably one of the most atmospheric scores I’ve ever heard. It fits the desert scenario perfectly.
Megacorp Army – Todano
Come on. Look at me and tell me this song doesn’t deserve to be in a James Bond movie.
The Docks – Planet Smolg
Silver City – Boldan
Remember what I said about the Route 113 song being catchy? WELL I THINK IT JUST MET ITS MATCH!
Testing Facility – Dobbo
Again with the atmosphere. This track plays in an industrial, radioactive waste filled world where new weapons are tested.
#3 Super Mario Bros. 3 – Nintendo
Super Mario Brothers 3 is such a happy game with a joyful, catchy soundtrack. I’m surprised it hasn’t been listed yet!
Grassland Theme
A great example of the blissful emotion this game is emitting.
Waterland Theme
More happy songs!
Iceland Theme
Wait…this one isn’t joyful. Quite eerie actually.
Pipeland Theme
Underground Theme
My favourite! Just listen to those drums!
Full stereo soundtrack:
#2 Donkey Kong Country – Rare
Donkey Kong Country for the SNES was one of the first video games I ever played alongside A Link to the Past. I love everything about this game, especially the soundtrack. It has the perfect funky jungle feeling.
Main Theme
DK Island Swing
Cave Dweller Concert
Talk about atmosphere with the water droplets and echoing instruments as if you were literally in a cave.
Aquatic Ambiance
No words. No words can describe this score.
Mine Cart Madness
Treetop Rock
I always loved this one.
Full soundtrack:
#1 The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Title Theme
Does this even need an introduction? This game has the most catchy songs of them all. Every single score in this game is memorable. All of them!
Hyrule Field
Kaepora Gaebora
Stupid owl! Stop talking!
Windmill Song/Song of Storms
Temple of Time
Gerudo Valley
Requiem of Spirit
Indescribable.
